'm going to continue to talk about our need to support senator feinstein's national effort for the assault weapons ban that she had in the 90's and that expired in 2004. it's going to be a lot more comprehensive and we need to have that. it's going to be an uphill fight, as president obama has reminded us, but we have it keep talking about it. we have to keep it in the forefrupt. we have to keep the pictures of our youth in front of us in everything that we do. this is what i am willing to do and again continue asking everybody for help in the city because the more i do that, the more of the graciousness of our community comes out because this is not something that just law enforcement can do, it's got to be our whole society acting together. thank you. senator dianne feinstein will not be included in the democratic gun control legislation that currently is working its way through the chamber. instead reid says feinstein's proposal will have, quote, an opportunity for a vote, possibly as a separate amendment. now this effort was sparked by the newtown school shooting in december and since then, we have seen a surge in applications for gun permits across this country. according to the fbi we saw a record 19 1/2 million background checks for firearms last year. nearly three million of them coming in december alone. that is the most for any month on record. and more than 7 million from december through february. that is a 54% increase from the previous year. this national trend is echoed in the microcosm of newtown, connecticut. where law enforcement say they have seen the pace of applications for gun permits double. so what does this all mean for the gun control debate, an effort going forward? joining me fox news political analyst juan williams. juan, we can talk about the strategy here and move onto the legislation itself. why, why di

the united states senate was unable to do. dianne feinstein's ban did not pass on the floor vote because harry reid decided they were not going it to put it in their gun bill that they're going to put on the floor. it's an assaults weapons ban. over 200 weapons are still available to americans. but no, this was not good enough. the reason was because reid and other democratic senators were afraid of how it would play. max baucus of montana jon tester of montana. mark begich of ark heidi keitkamp and joe maughan. they're running scared. if they all band together and said you know what we're going to do this, they would be with the american people. it turns out this time they were not with the american people. and then of course "abc news" washington poll post conducted march 7th shows 57% of americans support assault weapons ban. 41% oppose it. 57% of americans support it. why cannot the senate get that through their heads? why can't they sit there and say, you know what, this is what the people want. let's vote on it. 57 is the smallest majority for any of these gun laws. we've heard 91%

they would not even try to do that. the bill's sponsor, dianne feinstein today said she was told her assault weapons bill will be dropped by the senate democrats when they move their package on to the senate floor for a vote. now, if this seems weird or inconsistent, you're right. it is a little weird and inconsistent. the initial strategy of the democrats on gun issues was to move everything a la carte, so maybe you don't like the ban, but that shouldn't stop you for voting for an increase or background bill. so if you object to one part, you can still support the rest of it. that was the strategy at first. the strategy at the committee level, but now that they are past the committee level and on to the next step apparently, a la carte is over and the one bill will not include the ban. so you can fire dozens of rounds. senate democrats are not even going to try. what will be in the bill is still an unanswered question. but democrats aren't going to try for a limit on extended magazines. what about background checks? the group mayors against illegal guns released this ad today to try to keep
